rediscovering belonging through deep presence

Relational Mindfulness Coaching

Breathing in, I notice the out-breath of the trees.
Breathing out, I notice the in-breath of the trees.
The trees are breathing me, and I am breathing them.

Noticing the physical sensations of breathing, I become aware of all the human bodies alive on Earth at this very moment, breathing, just like my own body.

Noticing any thoughts or emotions present at this moment, I am aware that billions of living, breathing humans also think and feel, just like me.

Breathing in, I practice receiving: "I am not alone in this world".
Breathing out, I practice offering: "You are not alone in this world".

    Nature & Forest Therapy

Guided somatic practices to increase mindful awareness of our immediate physical and ecological environment and our own bodies’ relationship with it in the present moment. These practices can be done anywhere, also virtually and indoors. Expanding the practice of Relational Mindfulness to include the more-than-human world.

what is “relational mindfulness” coaching?

The practices I offer are about rediscovering connection & belonging: to our bodies, to other human beings, and to the more-than-human world. We do this through slowing down, becoming deeply present & attentive (mindful) — together (relationally).

In a single session, we may end up zooming in on or around one specific level — with the understanding that there are no fixed boundaries between them. A holistic ecology recognises that what happens on one level directly impacts all others. Ultimately, the boundaries between our individual self, social self, & planetary self are also porous and fluid by nature. Healing any one part also contributes to healing the whole.

The examples below are illustrative, to give you a sense of the types of issues I feel comfortable and competent to hold space for. It is not an exhaustive list.

Belonging in our bodies

🍂 Feeling like you were born in the wrong physical form — wrong planet, wrong species, wrong biological sex, etc
🍂 Grief and loss surrounding physical limitations caused by chronic pain, ageing, illness & other disability
🍂 Long-term stress & tension stored in the body — struggling to relax / slow down / “do nothing” / rest, ….

Belonging with other human beings

🍂 Experiences of being a visible minority in society: racial, cultural, linguistic, sexuality & gender expression, disability…
🍂 Impacts of migration background & geographical mobility on personal relationships and sense of cultural identity
🍂 Longing for heart-centred human relationships based on being deeply seen & understood

Belonging to the more-than-human world / greater community of life

🍂 Struggling to find a place on Earth or a house that feels like home
🍂 Loss of contact with ancestral land-based spiritual traditions
🍂 Navigating sociopolitical complexity in personal [eco]spiritual practice & land relationships
🍂 Feeling disconnected from nature as a result of living in urbanised & digitalised landscapes

My intention: that you discover the wholeness which is already here — already within and all around you — that you can reclaim your belonging in your own unique & authentic way.

Introductory conversation

Interested in exploring how I can support you? Feel free to find a time directly in my calendar. I am happy to answer any specific questions you have, share anything more which interests you about my background and approach, and give you time to get an embodied sense of what working with me is like.

If you cannot find an available time that works for you, please reach out by email or the contact form on this website and I’ll be happy to work something out.

This meeting may be up to 60 minutes and is free of charge.

Single session (60 min)

In general, we’ll meet for 60 minutes at a time, to explore whatever you need, and I’ll offer specific practices & techniques based on what is needed. We generally meet online — or, if you live near Utrecht, we can also meet in person. It’s also possible to book 2-3 sessions in a row so we have a longer block of time together.

Cost of a single session: sliding scale range 50-100€ (standard 75€)

Series of 6 sessions

Learning new skills and developing new habits takes time. A commitment to 6 sessions, spread out over 3-12 weeks, gives us a stable frame for making concrete progress towards any learning goals or intentions you may have which require ongoing practice and integration. During a 6 session container, I may offer “homework” or invitations which you can try out between sessions if that is desired. I am also reachable by email or text at any time for questions about session contents.

Cost of a 6-session series: 250-500€ (standard 375€)

Questions you may have

  • If you scroll to the top of this page, you’ll see one 😉 that one could be the beginning of a longer guided ecological mindfulness (“nature therapy”) practice — or, it can also be the entirety of an arrival practice — a brief mindful moment which I always offer at the beginning of a session to help us both land more fully.

Many of my social mindfulness practices are inspired by the Authentic Relating Games Manual.

  • I am currently based in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

All 1-1 sessions can be done both online and in-person.

Virtual meetings can be joined from any location you prefer. It is not necessary to be sitting in a chair in front of your computer. If you find it supportive to join from an outdoor environment, this is also very welcome.

For in-person meetings, we agree on a location based on what feels most appropriate or supportive for your needs. It can be outdoors, in nature or in the city. It can be in your own space, as well as in mine. For meetings outside of Utrecht, I would request an additional fee to cover travel expenses.

  • Choose below the standard rate if you are on a low or fixed income, or are experiencing financial hardship, particularly when due to the impact of maginalised social location.

Choose above the standard rate if you have an above average income, access to savings or investments or generational wealth, and can comfortably afford most things you need in daily life. — this helps support me to continue being able to offer the lower rates.

Choose the standard rate if you feel your situation lies somewhere in-between, or don’t know how to choose, or this feels too complicated to think about.

We agree on an amount that works for you, either in or after our intro call. This can be changed later on by agreement, but not for sessions you have already paid for.

I don’t turn anyone away on the basis of lack of funds alone + if you are located outside of the Global North, I take this into account in any discussions we may have about prices.

  • This is a peer-support and educational offering, not a healthcare service. I do not offer diagnosis, evaluation or treatment of disorder or illness, neither according to the western model of mental health nor according to any non-western models. I do not see myself as having expert knowledge about the cause of or the solution to your life challenges. Instead, I am here to offer concrete skills and embodied, relational experiences that you may use to get to know yourself and your own patterns better, if you so choose.

A “supportive and educational” role looks like:

    • Deep and attentive listening

    • Asking curious questions to support your own reflection and self-inquiry

    • Offering and demonstrating (“mindfulness”-related) practices that we can try together in-session and on your own time

    • Connecting you with other learning and community resources as needed

    • Committing to “practicing what I preach”: only guiding or teaching practices which I regularly practice myself, and can embody in-session through my way of being

    • Sharing personal or lived experiences when they are requested in support of your learning process

    • Referring to and collaborating with healthcare providers if issues and needs arise that feel beyond my knowledge and capacity to hold space for

Kind words

“Kirien is a gentle, soothing presence. They have a kind nature, are easy to talk to and share with, and - that voice! It's like being wrapped in satin, I could listen to it for hours. They did an excellent job of laying out expectations for how the session would go and of gently prompting. I'm not the meditative type, but I was softly led through one of my first experiences and felt it wasn't out of my reach to participate in. By the end my heart felt light as the leaves falling from the trees.”

— Janine S, forest therapy session

“This series has been such a rich experience for me. It is full of depth yet very playful and creative. Kirien really took us on a journey of deep self-exploration, while forming soulful connection with people in the series, with an experience that was totally unique to me. I always felt really nourished and enlivened at the end of each session. As a facilitator, Kirien is thoughtful, vulnerable, and playful. Everything he showcased was well-crafted and brought tremendous value.”

— Annie, authentic relating workshop participant

“Thank you for giving me the space to speak openly without any pressure (although I think I was putting some pressure on myself!). Your voice was so calming and grounding and just listening to you felt like a meditation in itself! I felt that you prompted me at just the right times and it was an amazing feeling to feel heard and understood. I've never felt that level of safety and comfort in a setting like that, even in therapeutic spaces where I'd expect to feel that kind of safety. You have a special gift and a natural way of making people feel heard and I really think you'd be an incredible healer.”

— Alisha, relateful poetry session
